excellence in Health and safety leadership award
The EEA Excellence in Health and Safety Leadership Award recognises an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership, commitment, and excellence to improve health and safety outcomes for the industry.
The Award is open to all Members including staff of a Corporate Member of the EEA .
Entrants do not need to hold a specific leadership role but must be able to demonstrate leadership through their actions.
The Award will be presented at the annual EEA Conference in September 2024.
The award recognises individuals that:
- Demonstrate;

- leadership that fosters a culture of safety, inspires others, and driving continuous improvement.
- an unwavering commitment to promoting health and safety.
- effective collaboration skills that encourage others to participate.
- Advocate and communicate effectively to publicise ideas, procedures and training that encourage knowledge sharing.
- Deliver tangible results and achievements that can be attributed to the nominee's work

Judging Criteria
Judges are looking for supporting information and evidence of:
- Excellence and innovation beyond ‘business as usual’ - leading health and safety projects, governance or other activity, that makes a difference to workplace health and safety, or public safety outcomes, and the ability to develop, and implement visionary change and inspire others.
- Impact on health, safety and wellbeing be it the enhancement of a culture of safety, or performance metrics including significant risk reduction, reduced incidents, and enhanced employee well-being.
- High standards of ethical and personal behaviour.
- Contribution and commitment to the development of others in the industry including evidence of effective communication, advocacy and knowledge sharing.
The Awards Committee reserves the right to not make an award in any given year.
Judging Panel
The judging panel will comprise of the EEA President (or nominee), the Chief Executive, WorkSafe (or nominee), EEA's Safety Standards and Procedures Group (SSPG) Chair, and EEA’s Public Safety Working Group Chair
How to Enter
Enter via the EEA Awards page nominating an individual who you think is most deserving of this award and provide supporting information to help our judging panel select the winner (See the judging criteria above).
Nominations must be signed-off by a member of the nominee’s organisation's senior management team.
Nominations should include:
- A compelling statement outlining why the nominee deserves to receive the Health and Safety Leadership Award.
- Explanation and evidence that demonstrates how the nominee meets each of the criteria for the award. Provide metrics, specific examples, or other evidence to support each criterion.
- Any relevant supporting documentation that further illustrate the nominee's impact and accomplishments in health and safety leadership. (e.g. performance metrics testimonials, case studies, awards, or press coverage).
- Supporting visual/multimedia material which includes up to 6 high quality colour images either in jpg or tif format, or clearly labelled photographs; and/or up to 25 seconds of mpg video file or automated PowerPoint presentation.
The judging panel may contact nominees directly for more information.
Award prize
The winner will receive a trophy and a cash prize of NZD$500 and a free full registration for the EEA Health and Safety Workshop the following year.

The person making the nomination (the entrant) accepts and agrees to the following terms and conditions:
- The award is open to Members or a staff of a Corporate Member of the EEA. including, but not limited to asset owners, contractors, consultants, equipment suppliers or others in the generation, network, or electricity retail sectors.
- All entries and supporting material must be received at the EEA by the deadline provided.
- The entrant must obtain the permission of all relevant parties to proceed with the entry, including the nominee.
- The entrant gives permission to the EEA to use any of the material provided for publicity and promotional purposes.
- The winner will be invited to attend the following year's Health and Safety Workshop.
- The assessment results of the award will not create any legal obligations between the entrant and the EEA.
- The nominee and nominator accept that the judges' decision is final and that no correspondence will be entered into.
- The judges undertake to observe the confidentiality of entries and to declare or avoid any possible conflict of interest.
- The judges reserve the right not to make an award where, in the judges' opinion, no entry of adequate standard has been received.
- The EEA reserves the right to publish any aspect of the award, including its presentation.
- Unless specifically arranged, submissions and supporting material will not be returned to the entrant.

- Describe why you believe this person should win the Excellence in Health and Safety Leadership award.
Strategic and visionary leadership: (up to 200 words)
- Describe the nominee’s leadership qualities, and explain how they nominee have provided strategic and visionary leadership, beyond business as usual, and their ability to develop and implement visionary change and inspire others.
Actions and Outcomes: (up to 600 words)
- Provide information on the nominee's achievements and contributions with evidence on each of the award criteria. This should include performance metrics, and other material (e.g. testimonials, case studies, awards, or press coverage) that demonstrates actions the nominee has taken, the impact they have made and outcomes they have achieved.
Ethical and personal behaviour: (up to 200 words)
- Describe how your nominee’s high standards of ethical and personal behaviour has impacted on the outcomes they have achieved.
Development of others: (up to 200 words)
- Describe how your nominee has contributed to the development of others in the industry.
