Evie Trolove, Head of Market and Customer Innovation, Orion New Zealand

What is the importance of this project from your company's perspective?

“Facilitating decarbonisation at the lowest cost to consumers is central to our purpose of powering a cleaner, brighter future with our communities. We are continually exploring new solutions to accelerate the energy transition, including a range of initiatives that support flexibility, enabling us to learn by doing.”

Why did you decide to participate as a trial partner?

“Orion is delighted to partner on this project to integrate electric vehicles into a smart and flexible electricity system through a common communications protocol.”

Tom Rose, Product Owner, Evnex

What is the importance of this project from your company's perspective?

“The New Zealand grid needs to work smarter as the electrification of transport places more demand on infrastructure.  Smart charging will maximise the utilisation of existing poles and wires, and avoid expensive upgrades in future by flattening peak load.  This project will trial one way that this better future might be enabled, with EDBs and smart charging providers communicating over OpenADR to manage demand.”

Why did you decide to participate as a trial partner?

“Evnex is keen to support a learning-by-doing ecosystem where we make progress by trying things out in the real world. We want our drivers to eventually realise the benefits of their smart chargers as a distributed energy resource, which we see as good for them and good for New Zealand Inc. Collaborating with the EEA and EDBs to explore one step on this path is a great way for us to contribute.”

Astad Kapadia, Head of DSO Strategy,  OpenLoop

What is the importance of this project from your company's perspective?

“OpenLoop’s ambition is to create value for its customers by enabling their EV chargers to act as flexibility resources and to provide a national EV Charging Aggregator service to stakeholders in the electricity industry.

One of the primary services OpenLoop is developing is to provide a solution that unlocks EV Charging flexibility for electricity distribution businesses that will inevitably have to manage with greater investment in their networks as the demand/uptake of EVs and EV charging puts pressure on existing distribution network assets, especially during peak electricity demand periods.

It is our ambition at OpenLoop to partner with electricity distribution businesses that view EV charging aggregators as an essential tool to effectively orchestrate EV charging energy demand on their networks to avoid unnecessary peak demand-based expenditure and instead increase the efficiency in their networks, whilst keeping customer centricity at the heart and creating shared value with them.”

Why did you decide to participate as a trial partner?

“OpenLoop is an EV charging solutions provider with a software platform that is based on international utility and mobility standards best practices. The company was proudly built from the ground up in New Zealand with full standards-based platform and Distributed Energy Resources asset control capability.  It currently has over 500 EV Chargers across New Zealand, with various different EV Charging manufacturers connected to it for EV charger fleet management, operational monitoring, and control services.
